CRETOLOGY

Ongoing long-term development

Cretology is a long-term hospitality, wellness and cultural destination in Heraklion, Crete, developed across a former olive refinery and its surrounding landscape. Conceived as a year-round ecosystem rather than a conventional hospitality development, it brings together hospitality, wellbeing, learning, craft, agriculture and community life.

Studio Vourli was commissioned to define the strategic and creative foundations of Cretology, developing an early founder-led vision into a coherent narrative, identity and experiential framework capable of guiding the destination as it evolves.

The strategy is rooted in the owners’ family history, the industrial heritage of the site and Crete’s agricultural, maritime and cross-cultural history. These layers informed the positioning and narrative, alongside a system of sectors, symbols and experiential principles connecting the identity of Cretology to the land and its future uses.

Rather than prescribing a finished destination, the framework establishes the principles through which future spaces, experiences, services, rituals and communications can develop as part of one recognisable whole — allowing Cretology to evolve while remaining grounded in place, culture and purpose.
